The objective of CF was to create a system and method to calculate highly optimised climb and descent profiles that can easily be flown by commercial aircraft. Following the conclusion of the project the consortium applied for, and were granted, a US patent (No: 9460629). CF2 focused on the operational and communications aspects of all of the stakeholders, so as to permit multiple aircraft to perform the highly optimised climbs and descents generated by the CF system. CF2 created a Concept of Operations (CONOPS) to facilitate this. A US patent application has also been filed for CF2.

CF was a collaboration between the University of Malta and QuAero Ltd. Whilst CF2 added Malta Air Traffic Services(MATS) to the original consortium members. In both cases, the University of Malta was the lead partner. Both projects were funded by the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST).
