SmartAP (Smart Artificial Pilot)

SmartAP proposes a novel concept of automation, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) trained to fly the aircraft is introduced to be able to monitor and control the automation systems whilst also communicating with the human pilots, keeping them in the loop and in the decision path.

Automation onboard transport aircraft has evolved to the point where the pilot’s role is becoming increasingly supervisory and managerial in nature. However, its complexity has led to the risk of pilots becoming less aware of how the automation is behaving. In addition, automation may become disengaged in abnormal and emergency situations and this may result in an undesirable significant increase in crew workload.

SmartAP proposes a novel concept of automation, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) trained to fly the aircraft is introduced to be able to monitor and control the automation systems whilst also communicating with the human pilots, keeping them in the loop and in the decision path. In this way, an additional human-machine interface path is introduced in parallel with the current pilot-aircraft human-machine interface (HMI).

SmartAP is developing a novel core architecture hosting the SmartAP functions that are intended to facilitate the certifiable use of AI for critical functions in the cockpit. It is also developing functionality for piloting aids in two important areas of crew support, namely in mitigating the risk and consequences of loss of control, and in workload reduction during departure/arrival. In this way, SmartAP aims to contribute towards increased safety of air transport.

A patent application will shortly be filed with the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office.

Collaborating with the Institute of Aerospace Technologies at the University of Malta, QuAero seeks to advance the state-of the art in the industry, At the same time , we provide consultancy services in several areas where we are subject matter experts. Lastly, but certainly not least, we are active trainers in the aerospace field.

Meet QuAero.

Alan Muscat (second left) is the Company Director. After a successful career with the Maltese flag carrier as a Captain, he is responsible for QuAero Research and Innovation. Joseph, Karl, and Mark all occupy important roles in the organization. Joseph Markham (first left) is the goto person in charge of Safety Management and Crew Resource Management. Karl Falzon (second right) as Head of Company Operations, oversees the day-to-day running of QuAero. Mark Soler (right) takes care of company finances. Notwithstanding the assigned roles, everyone is flexible and takes on different responsibilities in the projects which QuAero is involved in.

QuAero participates in a public dissemination event showcasing the results of the project. QuAero, as part of the SmartFDM consortium, participated at a public event to showcase the preliminary results of the SmartFDM project. The project was led by Dr Robert Camilleri from the Institute of Aerospace Technologies in collaboration of Dr Gianluca Valentino from the Dept. of Communications and Computer Engineering and QuAero Ltd as subject matter experts.
